Microsoft's 'Privacy Nightmare' Recall Returns with Security Fortress

Microsoft is giving its ambitious but troubled Recall feature a second chance, rolling it out through an optional preview update (KB5055627) with significantly enhanced security measures and a strict opt-in model. Hardware-Exclusive and AI-Forward
Recall remains exclusive to Copilot+ PCs, requiring specific hardware capabilities including powerful Neural Processing Units (NPUs) capable of at least 40 trillion operations per second, 16GB+ RAM, and substantial free storage space (50GB initially). This hardware-dependent approach helps Microsoft differentiate premium Copilot+ PCs while positioning Windows 11 as a platform for advanced local AI experiences.
The KB5055627 update also introduces two additional AI features for Copilot+ PCs:
- Improved Windows Search: Uses semantic indexing alongside traditional methods to better understand natural language search queries
- Image Search: Helps users find photos stored locally and in cloud services directly from the Start Menu
The gradual rollout via Microsoft’s Controlled Feature Rollout system targets Windows 11 version 24H2 on compatible hardware, with broader availability potentially coming in future updates.
