Despite Nvidia’s investment in SSI, the lab’s preference for TPUs signals growing competition in AI hardware. Google Cloud offers both Nvidia GPUs and its own TPUs, promoting the latter as more efficient for certain AI tasks. These specialized chips have become important for other major AI developers, including Apple and Anthropic.
The coordinated actions between Alphabet’s investment arm and its cloud division reveal a powerful investor-customer relationship, creating what industry observers call an “investor-customer flywheel”: Google invests in SSI, and SSI becomes a significant user of Google Cloud’s TPUs, generating substantial cloud revenue while providing the startup with crucial resources.
